PMA Congratulates Trans-Matic on 50 Years

Fifty years ago, Pat Thompson started a modest metal stamping business in Holland, Michigan.  The enterprise only had two production machines and was the first deep-draw metal stamping company in Western Michigan.  Today, PMA member company Trans-Matic is a global leader in metal stamping with more than 500 employees and facilities in not only Michigan, but Mesa, Arizona, Monterrey, Mexico, and Suzhou, China. Trans-Matic is headed by Pat’s son, P.J. Thompson. Both Pat and P.J. are past PMA chairmen of the board.

The elder Thompson was recently interviewed by MLive for the company’s milestone anniversary.   When asked about the history of Trans-Matic, he said, “I'm amazed at how the business has grown.  It is far beyond my mission and far beyond my ambition.  We've just followed the opportunities wherever they led us, and we kept making investments in our people and in our machinery and equipment.”

To commemorate 50 years, Trans-Matic hosted a celebration at their headquarters on June 18. With 200 people in attendance including Congressman Fred Upton, Holland Mayor Nancy DeBoer, and  Michigan Economic Development Corporation Chief Executive Officer Jeff Mason, the celebration was a huge success.  In an article by the Holland Sentinel, Mayor DeBoer credited Trans-Matic for making a difference in Holland and the greater Western Michigan area:

You have improved the quality of life for all of us.  You are not only giving financially, you are giving of your time, you are giving of your heart, you are volunteering throughout the community and you have a sense of service about you wherever you are.  That grows a full community where we all continue to care and develop those relationships.

Trans-Matic’s success has not been without the difficulties of the modern global economy.  The company is concerned with the rising cost of steel and the lack of skilled workers.   They often purchase foreign steel, and the imposed 25 percent tariffs by the Trump Administration will directly impact the price of Trans-Matic’s manufacturing components.   Despite the challenges, P.J. Thompson remains confident and optimistic, "We're building for the future... we continue to build the business in just the same way year after year.”   PMA is proud of Trans-Matic’s 50 years of success in the manufacturing industry and looks forward to the prosperous future to come.
